The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report issue for July 4, 2024 includes an article from the Foodborne Disease Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) that summarizes preliminary data from eight pathogens that are often transmitted through food. The FoodNet surveillance area includes 16% of the US population, and the infections that are tracked include those caused by Campylobacter, Cyclospora, Listeria, Salmonella, Shigella, STEC, Vibrio, and Yersinia.  In addition to data pointing to the incidence of infections increasing or decreasing for specific organisms compared to data from 2016-2018, the report includes an interesting discussion on the impact of culture-independent diagnostic tests (CIDT) on interpretation of surveillance data and trends in foodborne illnesses.
