NIAMRRE Welcomes New Member: Merck Animal Health

By Erica Baker posted 08-29-2021 11:00 PM

The National Institute of Antimicrobial Resistance Research and Education (NIAMRRE), today announced Merck Animal Health, known as MSD Animal Health outside the United States and Canada, a division of Merck & Co., Inc., Kenilworth, N.J., USA (NYSE:MRK), as a new industry member. Merck Animal Health develops, manufactures, and markets a range of veterinary medicines and services.

“By joining NIAMRRE, Merck Animal Health is taking its long-standing commitment to the global fight against infectious disease to the next level,” said Dr. Paul Plummer, executive director of NIAMRRE. “Their support for the responsible use of antibiotics to improve and maintain the health of companion and food-producing animals will create a global impact as we work toward the goal of One Health: achieving the best health for people, animals, plants, and the environment.”

The health and economic consequences of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are considerable and costly, making it a serious threat to human and animal health, which requires an organized response. Membership with NIAMRRE reflects Merck Animal Health’s belief that collaborating with a broad group of stakeholders will further advance optimal animal health outcomes.

“This is an exciting relationship with a global company that is committed to a holistic approach to disease prevention and management through evidence-based innovations and treatments that have a positive impact on the wellbeing of animals,” said Dr. Plummer. “We are eager for Merck Animal Health to share their dedication to addressing AMR and promoting antimicrobial stewardship through cross-sector collaboration with our other members.”

Merck Animal Health joins NIAMRRE's diverse membership roster, with members representing academic institutions, commodity groups, pharma and health organizations, retailers, nonprofits and member associations, and startup companies. Organizations committed to cross-sector engagement to stop the spread of AMR may apply for membership. Members are accepted year-round for organizations dedicated to advancing the One Health approach—a collaborative methodology to achieve optimal health outcomes between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment.
