Alejandro is a veterinary epidemiologist with experience spanning the private sector, academia, public health, and international development. He earned his DVM degree from Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), and furthered his education with an MSc and PhD in Epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) from Utrecht University (The Netherlands). He joined the FAO Headquarters in Rome early in 2018 where he works as an Animal Health Officer. In 2020 he spearheaded the development and publication of the FAO Action Plan on AMR 2021-2025. During his tenure at FAO, he has overseen and provided technical guidance for numerous capacity building projects related to AMR, especially in the areas of promotion of good practices, and surveillance and monitoring of AMR/ AMU (antimicrobial use). Presently, Alejandro is at the forefront of the development of the International FAO Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring (InFARM) System. Moreover, he collaborates closely with the Quadripartite (i.e. FAO, WOAH, WHO and UNEP) on multiple initiatives concerning integrated AMR/U surveillance. His role involves continual engagement with various units and departments at HQs, while also providing robust support to FAO regional offices in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
